About Girls with Grit

Empowering Girls Everywhere

Girls with Grit is an AZ local non-profit, run by older girls in the area and founded by two sophomores, Miah and Mary, in 2021 after having recognized a need for young girls to have an accessible community that supports their passions and endeavors, especially as many of the inequalities among men and women in male-dominated fields are rooted in childhood years. With this in mind, as well as the idea that STEM and the arts flourish when paired, Girls with Grit aims to involve younger girls in STEM and music through various one-on-one and small group tutoring. Since Girls with Grit aims to reach girls regardless of background, equipment like computers, instruments, pens, and notebooks, are provided for the girls during class times if need be. Tutoring is led by older girls in the community who have extensive tutoring experience as well as qualifications in the subject they are teaching. Tutors get to take on leadership roles in making tutoring personal, safe, fun, but also challenging; this provides a space for both younger and older girls to get involved and allows for a mentor-mentee relationship. Ultimately, Girls with Grit hopes to create a community, self-sustained by girls for girls.

Our Approach

Transparency

We believe in 100% transparency with everyone involved in our organization. We will always aim to operate with integrity and make sure everyone feels included. We always prioritize safety and security and make sure to stay in communication with parents.

Mentorship

One of the most special things about Girls with Grit is that our tutors are not only qualified in their academic/instrument, but are committed to being mentors and role models. Studies have found that the best way to truly challenge a stereotype is to provide role models who have done so; we hope for our mentors to aid in this.

Community

Though STEM and Music are what are being taught, we believe that they can also be a mechanism to teach more abstract qualities like confidence, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.
